Hey everyone!
Today I started my trip into the Rockies. The first 40 miles to Canon City were pretty easy except I got a flat tire. I stopped at the bike shop and had found a place to have lunch. I was trying to hide from the fact that I was going to get my ass kicked for the rest of the day. I had about 40 more miles of uphill and about 3500 feet of elevation gain. It was going to be a fun day.
I started the climbing and the roads were low grades and it made the ride a little bit easier, but still challenging. I made it to Gribble Mountian which was going to be the worst climb of the day. It was 5 miles of steap roads and no shoulders on the roads. Eventually, I made it to the top of the climb where the road leveled out a little. The view from the top was amazing. You get a real sence of accomplishment after completing this task. the day was not done. I still had about 21 miles until I was at Guffey were I would be staying for the night. The climbs were not really hard, but climbing for such a long time really takes it out of you.
I got to Guffey, which is a town of 77 people. I went to the cafe and got some food and tried to get a hold of Bill who owned all the rustic cabins in town. I came upon 4 other guys going to Bill's and as soon as we pulled up he had beers in had for us. He was an older guy who has been doing this for cyclist for 30 years now. He was a little crazy, but cool. He had about 30 cabins with a bunk in each where we could stay. It had an old school out house and out door showers. It was like you traveled back in time. There was something about this town that makes it really cool. The people were great and it was in my top 5 towns so far on the trip. I called it an early night and im gonig to try and get some sleep in my rustic cabin. It was only $10 which was a steal.
